About Barney Schultz

By 1965 Keane had left for the Yankees and Red Schoendienst was running a St. Louis club that slid to 80-81 and seventh place a year after the title. Wearing number 33, Schultz worked out of the bullpen until late August, when the Cardinals sent him back to Triple-A Jacksonville; he returned in September to finish the year. He made 34 appearances in all, going 2-2 with two saves and a 3.83 ERA over 42 and one-third innings, and threw his last major-league pitch on September 6, 1965 - a date that would also be the day he died, 50 years later. Card #28 in the 1965 Topps set is a first-series Cardinals card.

George Warren "Barney" Schultz was a right-handed knuckleball specialist who signed with the Philadelphia Phillies out of Burlington City High School in New Jersey in 1944, then spent 11 years in the minors, arm trouble keeping him no higher than Class B for six of them. He did not reach the majors until age 28, debuting for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1955. Stints with the Cardinals, Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs followed before a June 1961 call-up stuck; 1962 was his first full major-league season. Traded back to St. Louis in June 1963, he had his career year in 1964: recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville at the end of July, he went 1-3 with 14 saves and a 1.64 ERA over the Cardinals' pennant drive, then pitched in four games of the World Series, including the Game Three loss on Mickey Mantle's walk-off home run. St. Louis won the Series in seven games. He closed a 227-game major-league career, all in relief, at 20-20 with 35 saves and a 3.63 ERA, pitched one more professional season at Tulsa in 1966, and went on to instruct pitchers in the Cardinals' farm system before serving as their major-league pitching coach from 1971 through 1975 and the Cubs' in 1977. He was elected to the South Jersey Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988.
