About Billy Herman
Topps placed Herman in its third series for 1965 at card #251, a manager card from the middle of the run, since his playing days ended in 1947. It covers his first full season running the Red Sox: he coached third base in Boston from 1960 through 1964 before taking the job for the last two games of that season. The 1965 club went 62-100 and finished ninth, the only hundred-loss team Herman ever managed.
Billy Herman was a slick-fielding second baseman for 15 major league seasons, breaking in with the Chicago Cubs in 1931 and anchoring their infield until a 1941 trade sent him to the Brooklyn Dodgers, who won the National League pennant that fall. A ten-time All-Star from 1934 through 1943, he batted .304 for his career with 2,345 hits and 1,163 runs, hit as high as .341 in 1935, and drove in a career-best 100 runs for the 1943 Dodgers. He led the National League in putouts by a second baseman seven times and still holds the league single-season record at the position. Herman reached four World Series - 1932, 1935 and 1938 with the Cubs, 1941 with Brooklyn - and lost all four. He missed 1944 and 1945 serving in the Navy during World War II, returned to split 1946 between Brooklyn and the Boston Braves, and finished as the Pittsburgh Pirates' player-manager in 1947. He coached for the Dodgers, including their 1955 World Series winner, then for the Braves and the Red Sox before managing Boston from the end of 1964 into September 1966. The Veterans Committee elected him to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975.
