About Dick Sisler

1965 Topps #158, from the set's second print series, catches Sisler after his formal appointment as Reds manager in October 1964. In his first full season running the club in 1965, he guided Cincinnati to an 89-73 record and a fourth-place finish before being let go at year's end. The card's brief career recap focuses on his managerial post and does not mention that Sisler himself had played for the Reds over a decade earlier, in 1952.

Dick Sisler was a left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder who spent eight seasons in the majors with the Cardinals, Phillies and Reds from 1946 to 1953, batting .276 with 720 hits, 55 home runs and 360 RBI over 799 games. The son of Hall of Famer George Sisler, he broke in with St. Louis in 1946 and won a World Series ring that fall, then found his best role in Philadelphia, where he made the 1950 All-Star team and hit a tenth-inning, three-run home run on the season's final day to clinch the Whiz Kids' pennant. He closed his playing career back with Cincinnati and St. Louis before moving into coaching and managing, taking over the Reds in 1964 after Fred Hutchinson's illness and guiding them through the 1965 season.
