1965 Topps #289 Gordy Coleman

About Gordy Coleman
Number 289 in the fourth series catches Coleman just after he lost the everyday job at first base. Deron Johnson started 106 games there in 1964 to Coleman's 48, hitting .273 with 21 home runs, and Coleman's playing time fell to 89 games and 198 at-bats, fewer than half his 1962 total, with a .242 average, 5 home runs and 27 RBI. It was the thinnest of his full seasons in Cincinnati.
Gordon Calvin Coleman, born July 5, 1934, in Rockville, Maryland, lettered in four sports at Richard Montgomery High School, took a football scholarship to Duke, and signed with Cleveland in 1953 after a single year there. Army service at Fort McPherson cost him 1957 and 1958, and he came back to win the 1959 Southern Association Triple Crown and MVP award at Mobile. He debuted with the Indians that September, then went to Cincinnati in December with Billy Martin and Cal McLish in the trade for Johnny Temple. A left-handed hitter with a foot-in-the-bucket stance, Coleman held first base for the Reds from 1961 through 1963, then shared it with Deron Johnson, Tony Perez and Lee May as injuries cut into his playing time. His .338 career pinch-hitting average, 49 hits in 145 at-bats, stands as the best by any player who pinch-hit at least 100 times. Coleman finished at .273 with 98 home runs, joined the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1972 and stayed with the club as speakers bureau director and, from 1990, a broadcaster, until his death on March 12, 1994.
