Each card lists the 1965 leaders in one statistical category, the National League card first and the American League card second in each pair.
The story on this card
This card recaps the 1965 AL ERA race among two Indians starters and a White Sox reliever. Sam McDowell topped the AL with a 2.18 ERA for the Indians, adding a league-leading 325 strikeouts over 273 innings in his first All-Star season. Eddie Fisher, pitching almost exclusively in relief for the Chicago White Sox, posted a 2.40 ERA in a then American League record 82 appearances, going 15-7 with 24 saves and an All-Star selection. Sonny Siebert, McDowell's Cleveland rotation mate, finished right behind at 2.43 ERA while going 16-8, part of an Indians staff that led the league in strikeouts. McDowell and Siebert were the first AL starting duo to each post strikeout rates over nine per nine innings. Card 222 gathers the three on one 1966 Topps league-leaders card, part of series three, pairing Indians and White Sox on a single design.
Sam McDowell, 'Sudden Sam,' was a hard-throwing Cleveland Indians left-hander and six-time All-Star who led the American League in strikeouts five times, capping it with a 20-win, 304-strikeout 1970 that made him The Sporting News AL Pitcher of the Year. Eddie Fisher was a knuckleballing relief workhorse over fifteen major league seasons and six clubs, an American League All-Star in 1965 and a World Series champion with the 1966 Orioles, schooled in the pitch by bullpen mate Hoyt Wilhelm. Sonny Siebert - right-hander who threw a no-hitter for Cleveland in 1966 and made two All-Star teams over a 140-win career with the Indians, Red Sox, Rangers, Cardinals, Padres, and Athletics.
