About this card
Cards #215-226 are the twelve League Leaders, printed in the middle of the third series rather than at the front of the set - the one structural quirk of 1966. Each card lists the 1965 leaders in one statistical category, the National League card first and the American League card second in each pair.
The story on this card
Card 221 is Topps' 1966 salute to the National League's lowest earned run averages from the 1965 season, and it names the three men who finished on top. Sandy Koufax led at 2.04, going 26-8 for the Dodgers over 335.2 innings with 382 strikeouts on the way to his second Cy Young Award. Juan Marichal was next at 2.13, part of a 22-13 year for the Giants that included ten shutouts. Vern Law closed the board at 2.15, the lowest mark of his career, alongside a 17-9 record for the Pirates in the season the Associated Press named him National League Comeback Player of the Year. A third-series card from the League Leaders subset, it puts a Dodger, a Giant and a Pirate on one front.
Sandy Koufax was the Dodgers' left-hander nicknamed 'the Left Arm of God,' whose five-year run of dominance from 1962 to 1966 brought three unanimous Cy Young Awards and four no-hitters, including a perfect game, before an arthritic elbow forced his retirement at 30. Juan Marichal - the Dominican Dandy's high leg kick fronted the winningest arm of the 1960s: 191 victories in the decade, nine All-Star teams, 243 career wins, and in 1983 the first Hall of Fame plaque ever hung for a Dominican-born player. Vern Law was Pittsburgh's ace and the first Pirate to win a Cy Young Award, going 20-9 in 1960 and winning two World Series starts on a badly sprained ankle before a shoulder injury and a 1965 comeback shaped the rest of his career.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
