1966 Topps #57 Jim Lefebvre

About Jim Lefebvre
The 1966 Topps card at #57 is a first-series issue picturing Lefebvre with the Los Angeles Dodgers. It arrived as his bat outran his fielding address: Los Angeles opened him at third base, then moved him back to second for the bulk of the year, and he finished with career bests of 24 home runs, 74 RBI and a .274 average in 152 games. He started the All-Star Game at second base in St. Louis, filling in for the injured Joe Morgan, and the Dodgers won a second straight pennant, though Baltimore swept them in four games in the World Series.
Jim "Frenchy" Lefebvre was a switch-hitting infielder who spent all eight of his major league seasons, 1965 through 1972, with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The son of a well-known Southern California hitting instructor, he was taught to bat from both sides at age ten, starred at Morningside High School and signed with the Dodgers in early 1962 for $11,000. Three minor league seasons later he won the second base job out of spring training and joined first baseman Wes Parker, shortstop Maury Wills and third baseman Jim Gilliam to form the first all switch-hitting infield in major league history. He was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1965 and a World Series winner that same autumn, then posted his best numbers in 1966, when he was an All-Star and the Dodgers took a second straight pennant. Leg, shoulder, wrist and ankle injuries cut into the seasons that followed, and he shuttled between second and third base as younger Dodgers arrived, playing his last big league game in 1972. He spent four more seasons in Japan with the Lotte Orions, then came back to coach six major league clubs and to manage the Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers.
