1966 Topps #13 Lou Johnson

About Lou Johnson
Number 13 in the first series, and his first Topps card in Dodger blue. It followed the season that made him: summoned from Spokane after Tommy Davis broke an ankle on May 1, 1965, he played 131 games, nearly all of them in left field, and hit .259 with 12 home runs, 58 RBI and 15 steals. In Sandy Koufax's perfect game on September 9 he walked, stole third and scored the only run, then doubled for the game's only hit. He homered twice in the World Series, the second leading off the fourth inning of a 2-0 Game 7.
Louis Brown Johnson, known around Los Angeles as Sweet Lou for his smile and his outgoing way, was a right-handed outfielder from Lexington, Kentucky. The Yankees signed him in 1953 and he spent seven full seasons in the minor leagues before debuting with the Chicago Cubs in April 1960. Brief trials followed with the Los Angeles Angels and Milwaukee Braves, then two more seasons back in the minors, the second of them at Spokane after Detroit traded him to the Dodgers for Larry Sherry in April 1964. His break came in May 1965, when a Tommy Davis ankle injury opened left field at Dodger Stadium; Johnson took the job, helped Los Angeles to a world championship and homered in Game 7. He split left and right field on the 1966 pennant winner, was slowed by injuries in 1967, and finished as a reserve with the Cubs, Cleveland Indians and California Angels. Eight big-league seasons left him at .258 with 48 home runs and 232 RBI in 677 games.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
