About Frank Carpin

Card #71 in Topps' first series of 1966 shows Carpin with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the club he pitched for in his 1965 rookie season out of the bullpen. That November the Pirates lost him to the Houston Astros in the rule 5 draft, and he spent his final big-league season, 1966, pitching for Houston. This card is a recognized rookie card for Carpin.

Frank Carpin was a left-handed pitcher from Brooklyn who grew up in Richmond, Virginia, and starred at Notre Dame, where he set a school single-game strikeout record against Indiana in 1958. He signed with the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent before the 1959 season and spent several years working through the Yankees system, including a strong 1964 with Richmond. The Pirates drafted him from the Yankees organization in the November 1964 minor league draft, and after an effective spring and a hot start at Triple-A Columbus, he was called up in May 1965 when Pittsburgh's bullpen was short-handed. He debuted against the Chicago Cubs and picked up the win. Carpin pitched two big-league seasons for Pittsburgh and Houston before leaving the game for a long career in the investment business, crediting the poise and resilience baseball taught him.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
