The story on this card
Issued in Topps' second 1966 print series, this Rookie Stars card pairs Bork with fellow Pirates prospect Jerry May, both shown representing Pittsburgh. It followed Bork's 1964 season with the Pirates, in which he appeared in 33 games out of the bullpen and finished 2-2 with a 4.07 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 42 innings. A left-handed Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher who reached the majors in 1964 after signing out of Buffalo, New York, and standing out in the minors with a 19-7, 2.00 ERA season in 1962.
By 1966, May was still a part-time catcher for Pittsburgh, appearing in 42 games as he continued developing behind the Pirates' veteran backstops. Card #123, another Rookie Stars issue from the set's second print series, pairs him with pitcher Frank Bork, spotlighting two more Pirates farmhands on a single shared card. A defense-first catcher who anchored the Pittsburgh Pirates' staff from 1967 through 1969 and caught Dock Ellis's 1970 no-hitter, valued far more for his strong throwing arm than for his bat.
