About this card
Cards #215-226 are the twelve League Leaders, printed in the middle of the third series rather than at the front of the set - the one structural quirk of 1966. Each card lists the 1965 leaders in one statistical category, the National League card first and the American League card second in each pair.
The story on this card
Topps #215 is a League Leaders card from the set's third series, recapping the 1965 National League batting race. Roberto Clemente won it at .329 for Pittsburgh, his third batting title after 1961 and 1964, in the middle of his long run of Gold Gloves in right field. Hank Aaron finished second at .318 with 32 home runs for the Milwaukee Braves, though the card already places him with Atlanta after the franchise's move. Willie Mays was third at .317, a season in which his career-high 52 home runs helped earn him the National League Most Valuable Player award. Topps prints Clemente as Bob Clemente here, the Americanized name that stayed on his cards into 1969, and the card puts three future Hall of Famers on one piece of cardboard.
Pittsburgh's right fielder for eighteen seasons, Roberto Clemente won four National League batting titles and twelve straight Gold Gloves, was the 1966 NL Most Valuable Player and the 1971 World Series MVP, and died flying earthquake relief in 1972. Hank Aaron was the Braves' right fielder and one of the greatest hitters in history, a 25-time All-Star who broke Babe Ruth's home run record in 1974 on his way to 755 career homers. Willie Mays was the Say Hey Kid, the five-tool center fielder of the New York and San Francisco Giants: Rookie of the Year in 1951, Most Valuable Player in 1954 and 1965, twelve straight Gold Gloves, 660 home runs, Hall of Fame in 1979.
