About this card

This is one of the five combo cards in the 1966 Topps set - #52 Power Plus, #99 Buc Belters, #156 D P Combo, #199 ChiSox Clubbers and #273 Astro Aces - each grouping two or three teammates under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

Card 99 in Topps' 1966 series pairs two Pittsburgh Pirates first basemen who shared time at the position in 1965. Willie Stargell was coming off a breakout year, driving in 100 runs for the first time while splitting duty between left field and first base. Donn Clendenon had taken over as the Pirates' regular first baseman after Pittsburgh traded Dick Stuart to open the job for him, and by 1965 he had driven in 96 runs while manning the position most days. Grouping the two under one heading let Topps spotlight the power building in the Pirates' lineup without giving either man his own card in that early print series.

Willie Stargell was Pittsburgh's power-hitting left fielder and first baseman, a seven-time All-Star known as "Pops" who won two World Series with the Pirates and, at age 39, took the 1979 National League MVP, NLCS MVP and World Series MVP awards. Donn Clendenon was Pittsburgh's power-hitting first baseman through the 1960s, a 28-homer man in 1966 who, after refusing a trade to Houston, landed with the Miracle Mets and hit three home runs to win the 1969 World Series MVP award.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
