About this card

Cards #215-226 are the twelve League Leaders, printed in the middle of the third series rather than at the front of the set - the one structural quirk of 1966. Each card lists the 1965 leaders in one statistical category, the National League card first and the American League card second in each pair.

The story on this card

This 1966 Topps League Leaders card recaps the 1965 American League batting race, when only two other regulars in the junior circuit even reached .300. Minnesota's Tony Oliva topped the league at .321, his second straight AL batting title after taking the crown as a rookie in 1964. Boston's Carl Yastrzemski finished second at .312, edged late in the season after Oliva pulled ahead down the stretch. Cleveland's Vic Davalillo, a slap-hitting center fielder known for going with the pitch, rounded out the top three at .301, his only All-Star season. Card #216 sits in Topps' third series for 1966 and lists the trio's clubs as Minnesota, Boston, and Cleveland.

Tony Oliva - Minnesota's smooth-swinging Cuban right fielder, the 1964 American League Rookie of the Year and a three-time batting champion who made the All-Star team in each of his first eight full seasons before knee injuries took over; Cooperstown called in December 2021. Carl Yastrzemski, 'Yaz,' gave Boston all 23 of his seasons, following Ted Williams in left field. He won the 1967 Triple Crown and MVP, three batting titles, seven Gold Gloves and 18 All-Star nods, and reached Cooperstown on the first ballot in 1989. Vic Davalillo was Cleveland's speedy Venezuelan center fielder, a 1964 Gold Glove winner and 1965 All-Star starter who later became one of baseball's best pinch hitters and dragged the bunt that lifted the 1977 Dodgers past Philadelphia.
