About Woody Woodward

The Braves' move to Atlanta in 1966 coincided with Woodward's best season, as he set career highs with a .264 average, 120 hits, and 43 RBIs across 144 games split between second base and shortstop. Manager Bobby Bragan called him the backbone of the team's defense. His 1966 Topps card, number 49, from the first print series, captures him with the Atlanta Braves during that career year.

William Frederick Woodward, known as Woody, was a slick-fielding infielder from Miami who signed with the Milwaukee Braves out of Florida State University after a standout amateur career, including third-team All-American honors. He spent nine major league seasons, 1963 to 1971, as a shortstop and second baseman for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds, valued more for his glove than his bat. His finest offensive year came in 1966 with Atlanta, when he posted career highs across the board. Traded to Cincinnati in 1968, he became a steady utility piece for the Big Red Machine, appearing in the 1970 National League Championship Series and World Series against Baltimore. He hit only one home run in 2,423 career plate appearances. He retired after the 1971 season and later built a long front-office career, including stints as general manager of the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Seattle Mariners.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
