About Frank Linzy

Card #78 in Topps' first 1966 series carries an All-Star Rookie trophy graphic marking Linzy's selection to the prior year's Topps All-Star Rookie team, recognition earned after his standout 1965 season. On the field that year he again anchored the Giants bullpen through a close pennant race, appearing in 51 games with 16 saves and a 2.96 ERA as San Francisco again contended into the late season.

Frank Alfred Linzy, born September 15, 1940, in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, pitched eleven big league seasons as a hard-throwing right-handed reliever, almost never starting a game. Debuting with the San Francisco Giants in 1963, he became one of the National League's most trusted firemen, entering games in the seventh or eighth inning just as often as the ninth. His signature stretch came in 1965 and 1966, when he anchored the Giants' bullpen through two tight pennant races, finishing 13th in the 1965 NL Most Valuable Player vote and third for NL Rookie of the Year. Linzy remained with San Francisco through 1970, then closed out his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, and Philadelphia Phillies, retiring after the 1974 season. Over 516 career games he posted a 62-57 record, a 2.85 earned run average, and 111 saves, working almost exclusively in relief. He was never selected to an All-Star team and is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee.
