The story on this card
1966 Topps #156, issued in the set's second print series, pairs Dick Schofield and Hal Lanier as a combination card grouping two San Francisco Giants infielders. Schofield had joined the Giants in a May 1965 trade with Pittsburgh that sent Jose Pagan the other way, and by 1966 he opened the season as a utility man after rookie Tito Fuentes took over the shortstop job. Lanier, entering his third big-league season, had established himself as the Giants' everyday second baseman and had already been named the club's infield captain by teammate Willie Mays. The card puts the two men together as fellow Giants infielders sharing double-play duty on the same roster that season, before the year's trades and callups reshuffled both their roles.
Ducky Schofield spent 19 big-league seasons as a slick-fielding infielder for seven clubs, more often a reserve than a regular, and stepped in as Pittsburgh's shortstop down the stretch of the 1960 pennant race. Hal Lanier - a defense-minded second baseman and shortstop for the Giants and Yankees in the 1960s and '70s, later the manager who took the Houston Astros to the 1986 NL West title.
