About Marcelino Lopez
The 1966 Topps card, #155, is a plain second-series single. It carries the Topps All-Star Rookie trophy in the corner, the honor Topps handed him for his 1965 season, and it is his first card under the California Angels name. The year that followed went sideways. A heavy winter pitching in Venezuela left him worn down, and he slid to 7-14 with a 3.93 ERA, led American League starters by hitting nine batters and finished second in the league with twelve wild pitches. He said afterward that he had left his best stuff in Venezuela.
Marcelino Pons Lopez, a left-handed pitcher born in Havana, Cuba on September 23, 1943, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies ten days after his sixteenth birthday and reached the majors in 1963 as a hard-throwing teenager. He spent 1964 in the minors, and that October the Phillies sent him to the Los Angeles Angels as the player to be named later in the Vic Power deal. In 1965 he went 14-13 with a 2.93 ERA and finished second in American League Rookie of the Year voting. Arm trouble and control problems undid him after that, and in June 1967 the Angels traded him to the Baltimore Orioles. Converted into a reliever, he pitched for the pennant-winning Orioles of 1969 and 1970 and helped Baltimore win the 1970 World Series, appearing once in each of those postseasons. He later pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers and Cleveland Indians, finishing with a 31-40 record, a 3.62 ERA and 426 strikeouts across eight big-league seasons. He died in Hialeah, Florida in 2001 at 58.
