The story on this card
McGlothlin split 1966 between the Angels and their Seattle farm club, making 11 starts in the majors and going 3-1 with a 4.52 ERA over 19 games. This card is 1966 Topps #417, a multi-player Rookie Stars card from the fifth print series shared with fellow Angels pitching prospect Ed Sukla, and is recognized as McGlothlin's rookie card. A California Angels and Cincinnati Reds right-hander who made the 1967 AL All-Star team and started World Series games for the pennant-winning 1970 and 1972 Reds clubs.
Sukla's card comes from the Rookie Stars subset in Topps' fifth series, pairing him with Jim McGlothlin, both shown as California Angels. It arrived as the Angels opened Anaheim Stadium; that April, Sukla earned the win in the club's first victory at the new ballpark, working scoreless relief against the White Sox. He made just twelve appearances for the Angels that year before returning to the minors, where a shoulder injury later that season ended his shot at another call-up, closing out his three-season run in the majors. A sinker-balling Angels reliever who pitched the win in the team's first victory at Anaheim Stadium, then spent decades after his playing days as a respected major league scout.
