About this card
The 46 Rookie Stars cards group a club's prospects under one number - except #553, which mixes Braves and Angels, and #591 NL Rookie Stars, which mixes Dodgers and Phillies. The class is headlined by #254 (Ferguson Jenkins, with Bill Sorrell) and #288 (Don Sutton, with Bill Singer).
The story on this card
Aust opened the 1966 season on the Cardinals roster fresh off his 1965 debut, and his lone big-league decision came on Opening Day: three relief innings against the Philadelphia Phillies that unraveled in the 12th when Dick Allen and Bill White sparked the Phillies' rally. His 1966 Topps card, #179, is part of the second print series and pairs him with fellow Cardinals farmhand Bob Tolan on a Rookie Stars card, a recognized rookie card for Aust. A right-handed Cardinals reliever from Tecumseh, Nebraska, who worked five years through the farm system before a strong 1965 minor league season earned him a big-league call-up.
1966 Topps #179, another second-series Rookie Stars card, pairs Tolan with Dennis Aust of the Cardinals pitching staff. Tolan spent 1966 in a reserve outfield role in St. Louis, appearing in 43 games as the club continued to develop the young talent that would soon include a World Series roster spot for him. A speedy left-handed outfielder who blossomed into an everyday center fielder with Cincinnati's Big Red Machine after years as a Cardinals reserve, leading the National League in stolen bases in 1970.
