About Don Dennis

Card #142 in Topps' second print series pictures Dennis with the Cardinals, coming off a 1965 rookie season that earned him St. Louis Rookie of the Year honors; it is a recognized rookie card. On May 12, 1966, Dennis won the first game ever played at Busch Memorial Stadium, retiring Felipe Alou to strand runners at first and second with two outs in the 12th before Lou Brock's walk-off single. A spring shoulder injury slowed his start, and he finished the year 4-2 with a 4.98 ERA in 38 games.

Don Dennis was a right-handed relief pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1965 and 1966. A Kansas native and Emporia State product, he signed with St. Louis in 1961 and worked his way up through Winnipeg, Tulsa and Jacksonville before a midseason 1965 callup. He went 2-3 with a 2.29 ERA and six saves as a rookie, good enough to earn St. Louis Rookie of the Year honors from the local BBWAA chapter. In 1966 he won the first game ever played at Busch Memorial Stadium, though a spring shoulder injury and inconsistent form left him at 4-2 with a 4.98 ERA. That December the Cardinals traded him to the Chicago White Sox, but he never pitched in the majors again, closing out his career in the high minors before returning to Kansas. In two big league seasons he was 6-5 with a 3.69 ERA and eight saves in 79 games.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
