About Dick Egan

Card #536 is another seventh-series high number picturing Egan with the California Angels. His first Topps card had come three years earlier. The Angels were his landing spot after Detroit traded him to St. Louis in January 1965, the Cardinals sold him to Cincinnati that June and the Reds sold him on to California that October, a 1965 spent entirely in the minors. His whole Angels career was 11 relief appearances, no decisions, 11 strikeouts and a 4.40 ERA in 14 1/3 innings, the lightest of his four big-league seasons. California traded him to the Dodgers for Howie Reed on May 27, 1966, so this final-series card shows him with a club he had already departed.

Richard Wallis Egan was born March 24, 1937, in Berkeley, California, and starred as a pitcher, basketball player and football quarterback at Pleasant Hill High School before pitching at a nearby junior college. The Detroit Tigers signed him in February 1958, and in 1962 he led the Pacific Coast League in strikeouts and was voted its Pitcher of the Year with Hawaii. A 6-foot-4 left-hander who threw and batted left-handed, he worked strictly out of the bullpen in the majors, never starting once in 74 appearances. He debuted for Detroit on April 9, 1963, pitched two seasons there, spent 1965 entirely in the minors after a trade to St. Louis and a sale to Cincinnati, reached the California Angels in 1966 and finished with the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 4, 1967. His career line was modest: 1-2, a 5.15 ERA, two saves and 68 strikeouts in 101 1/3 innings, with his lone win coming in relief on April 24, 1967. He later dealt craps and blackjack at a Lake Tahoe casino, spent 14 years with the Major League Scouting Bureau, coached and managed in the Texas Rangers system, and scouted for the Marlins and Tigers, becoming a special assistant to Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski in 2007.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
