About Grady Hatton
This card catches Grady Hatton as a rookie big league manager. After years building talent in the Astros farm system, including a Sporting News Minor League Manager of the Year award in 1965, he took over as Houston's manager for the 1966 season while also holding the title of club vice president and sharing general manager duties. The card is part of print series 6 in the 1966 set.
Grady Hatton was a Texas-born infielder who reached the majors in 1946 straight from Army Air Forces service, with no minor league seasoning, and went 3-for-5 with two RBI in his debut against the Cubs. A left-handed hitter and right-handed thrower, he anchored third base for the Cincinnati Reds through the late 1940s, leading NL third basemen in fielding in 1949, before shifting to second base in 1952 and earning his lone All-Star selection that year. Traded to the Chicago White Sox in April 1954, he was sent on to the Boston Red Sox three weeks later along with cash in a deal for future Hall of Famer George Kell, and played regular third base for Boston through 1955 before closing his playing days in utility roles with the Cardinals, Orioles and finally the Cubs in 1960. Over 12 major league seasons he batted .254 with 91 home runs, 1,068 hits and 533 RBI in 1,312 games. After his playing career he managed extensively in the minors, was named Sporting News Minor League Manager of the Year in 1965, and went on to manage the Houston Astros from 1966 through mid-1968.
