About Pete Charton

By 1966 Charton's playing days were already behind him; his lone major league season had come and gone in 1964, and arm trouble in Triple-A had ended his pro career the following year. This card, a series 4 issue from the regular set, still lists him with the Boston Red Sox.

Pete Charton, born Frank Lane Charton in Jackson, Tennessee, was a right-handed pitcher who batted left-handed and stood 6-foot-2. A star at Baylor University, he signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1962 after an All-Southwest Conference season. A first-year bonus rule forced Boston to keep him on the major league roster for all of 1964 rather than let him develop in the minors, so his entire big league career came in that single season: 25 games, five starts, a 0-2 record and a 5.26 ERA over 65 innings. Veteran Bill Monbouquette mentored him on pitching to opposing hitters. After his shoulder gave out in Triple-A ball, Charton left baseball, finished college, and earned a PhD in geology from Michigan State. He spent 35 years teaching at Roane State Community College in Tennessee and later wrote a Christian devotional for incoming college students.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
