The story on this card
Card #356 pairs Johnson with fellow Red Sox farmhand Ken Sanders in a Rookie Stars issue from the 1966 Topps set. Johnson was in Boston's catching pipeline that year; within months the Orioles would select him away from the Red Sox in the Rule 5 draft, but he never reached a major league box score with either club. TCDB counts this as his rookie card. Catcher Lawrence Owen Johnson spent thirteen pro seasons with the Phillies, Red Sox and Orioles organizations without a big league regular-season game, then left baseball in 1968 to become a Southern Baptist minister, pastoring a South Carolina church for nearly four decades.
Drafted by the Red Sox from Kansas City in the November 1965 Rule 5 draft, Sanders opened 1966 in Boston's bullpen before a June trade sent him back to the Athletics along with Jim Gosger and Guido Grilli. Across the two stops he went 6-10 with a 3.75 ERA and three saves in 62 games, and on August 27 made his only career start, working four innings against the Angels. His 1966 Topps Rookie Stars card, #356, shows him with the Red Sox; it is from print series 4, is a recognised rookie card, pairing him with fellow Rookie Star Owen Johnson, who never appeared in a major league game. A well-traveled relief pitcher for eight clubs across ten seasons, best remembered for his record-setting 1971 with the Milwaukee Brewers, when he led the majors in appearances, games finished and saves.
