1966 Topps #321 Rick Reichardt

About Rick Reichardt
1966 Topps #321, from the set's fourth print series, shows Reichardt with the California Angels. He was off to his best start yet, batting .288 with 16 home runs and 44 RBI through 89 games, and that season he became the first player to hit a home run at the newly opened Anaheim Stadium before a kidney ailment ended his year and required surgery.
Frederic Carl Reichardt was a two-sport star at the University of Wisconsin, twice leading the Big Ten in batting and starring at fullback on the 1962 Badgers team that fell to USC in the 1963 Rose Bowl. A bidding war for his amateur signing led him to the Los Angeles Angels in 1964 with a then-record $200,000 bonus, and the frenzy over his signing helped push Major League Baseball to institute its first amateur draft in 1965. He debuted with the Angels that September and settled into the outfield as the club moved to Anaheim, becoming the first player to homer at the new Anaheim Stadium in 1966. A kidney ailment that year required surgery and slowed him afterward, though he still posted double-digit home run totals into the early 1970s. He was later traded to the Washington Senators, then to the Chicago White Sox and finally the Kansas City Royals, retiring in 1974 after eleven big-league seasons as an outfielder.
