The story on this card
Card #179 is a Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow Braves prospect Cecil Upshaw, from the set's second print series. It is Vaughan's rookie card, issued the year after his headline debut, when he started the opener of a Houston doubleheader in 1966 and picked up the win in seven innings, striking out six. He spent the winter back home in Brownsville hoping to stick on Atlanta's roster for 1967. A hard-throwing left-handed pitcher out of Brownsville, Texas, who signed with the Milwaukee Braves for a $25,000 bonus out of high school and won his major-league debut for Atlanta as an eighteen-year-old in September 1966.
Upshaw opened 1967 in the minors at Richmond, where 25 games and 14 saves earned a June call-up to Atlanta. He won his first major league decision on July 22 against St. Louis and finished the year 2-3 with a 2.58 ERA and eight saves in 30 games. This Rookie Stars card, part of the set's second print series, pairs him with fellow Braves rookie Charles Vaughan and is a recognized rookie card for Upshaw. A 6-foot-6 sidearm reliever who anchored the Atlanta Braves bullpen, Cecil Upshaw racked up 86 career saves before a freak awning injury derailed his prime.
