About Derrell Griffith

By the time his 1967 Topps card, #502 in the sixth series, reached shelves, it pictured Griffith with the Houston Astros, whose farm system he was playing out his last professional season in after the Dodgers traded him to the Mets and he failed to stick there. It closed out his run of Topps cardboard as his playing career wound down in the minors.

Robert Derrell Griffith was an outfielder and third baseman who spent parts of four seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, from a one-game callup in September 1963 through 1966. Born in Anadarko, Oklahoma, he batted left and threw right, attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and signed with the Dodgers before the 1962 season after strong showings at every minor league level. His only extended big league stretch came in 1964, when he started 35 games at third base and 29 more in the outfield, hitting .290 with four home runs and 16 doubles. He got a shot at the everyday left field job in 1965 after Tommy Davis broke an ankle, but lost it within weeks and returned to Triple-A. A shoulder injury suffered in 1966, which he kept private for decades, limited him to one more hit before he went back to the minors. The Dodgers traded him with Tommy Davis to the New York Mets after 1966; he never stuck in the majors again and closed out his career in the Astros' and Braves' farm systems in 1967. He finished with a .260 career average over 124 games.
