About Joe Foy

Foy's 1967 Topps card, #331, is a plain series-4 base issue. He hit second in the order for the pennant-winning 1967 Red Sox under new manager Dick Williams, though a slow start led to periodic benching. He set a career high with 16 home runs and made a highlight-reel defensive play behind Billy Rohr's near no-hitter. Foy went 2-for-15 as Boston lost the World Series to St. Louis in seven games.

Joe Foy grew up in the Bronx and signed with Minnesota in 1962 before the Red Sox drafted him. He tore through the minors, winning the 1965 International League batting title, MVP and Rookie of the Year with Toronto, and broke in at third base for Boston in 1966. Foy drew walks at an elite rate and helped anchor the 1967 pennant-winning Red Sox, batting in Boston's World Series loss to St. Louis. Weight and fielding struggles dogged him, and after 1968 the Red Sox left him unprotected; Kansas City took him in the expansion draft. A strong 1969 season led the Royals to trade him to the Mets, a deal remembered for the player Kansas City got back. His bat cooled in New York, and after a brief stop with Washington he was out of the majors by 1971. Foy later overcame substance-abuse issues and worked as a counselor for troubled youth.
