1967 Topps #513 Marcelino Lopez

About Marcelino Lopez
Card #513 comes out of the sixth series in 1967 Topps. It shows him as a California Angel, a uniform he had already left by midseason. Tendinitis held him to nine innings across three early starts, and after a long stay on the disabled list he faced five Baltimore hitters in relief without retiring any of them. Nine days after that outing, on June 15, 1967, the Angels sent him and minor leaguer Tom Arruda to the Orioles for utility man Woodie Held. Between the two clubs he threw only 26 2/3 innings all year, going 1-2 with a 4.73 ERA.
Marcelino Pons Lopez, a left-handed pitcher born in Havana, Cuba on September 23, 1943, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies ten days after his sixteenth birthday and reached the majors in 1963 as a hard-throwing teenager. He spent 1964 in the minors, and that October the Phillies sent him to the Los Angeles Angels as the player to be named later in the Vic Power deal. In 1965 he went 14-13 with a 2.93 ERA and finished second in American League Rookie of the Year voting. Arm trouble and control problems undid him after that, and in June 1967 the Angels traded him to the Baltimore Orioles. Converted into a reliever, he pitched for the pennant-winning Orioles of 1969 and 1970 and helped Baltimore win the 1970 World Series, appearing once in each of those postseasons. He later pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers and Cleveland Indians, finishing with a 31-40 record, a 3.62 ERA and 426 strikeouts across eight big-league seasons. He died in Hialeah, Florida in 2001 at 58.
