The story on this card
This high number from the 1967 set's seventh and final series is a multi-player Rookie Stars card that pairs Hernandez, credited with Atlanta, and Norm Gigon, credited with the Chicago Cubs, and it stands as Hernandez's rookie card. Taken by Atlanta in the November 1966 Rule 5 draft after years in the minors and Puerto Rican winter ball, Hernandez broke camp with the Braves in 1967 and was thrown into relief duty right away, tossing 1 2/3 innings in the season opener against Houston. He earned his first major league save in just his second appearance, retiring both batters he faced. He finished his rookie season with five saves and two losses for a 77-85 Atlanta club. A Puerto Rican left-hander whose sidearm delivery and screwball made him one of Pittsburgh's most reliable relievers, anchoring the Pirates' bullpen through three straight NLCS appearances in the 1970s.
Card #576 is a Rookie Stars issue from Topps' final 1967 print series, a high number pairing Gigon with Ramon Hernandez. It arrived during Gigon's only major-league season, a utility role with the Cubs that included a three-run homer off Juan Pizarro against the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 23 and a June stretch filling in at second base while Glenn Beckert served military duty. The card stands as a recognised rookie card for a player who retired from baseball that same year to coach at Lafayette College. A Colby College graduate working on a history doctorate, Gigon spent eight minor-league seasons before a strong 1967 spring training earned him a utility role with the Cubs.
