About Dave Boswell

Boswell opened 1967 struggling after switching to an overhand delivery, then rebounded under new pitching coach Early Wynn to post a strong second half for a Twins club that fought Boston, Detroit and Chicago down to the final weekend of the pennant race. He finished 14-12 with a career-high 204 strikeouts in 222.2 innings and a 3.27 ERA. This card, #575, is a high number from the seventh and final print series and is recognized as his rookie card.

Dave Boswell was a hard-throwing right-hander who debuted with the Minnesota Twins in 1964 at age 19 and spent eight major league seasons, all in the American League, with the Twins, Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles. He averaged 14 wins and over 200 innings across a four-year stretch from 1966 to 1969, leading the AL in winning percentage in 1966 and winning a career-high 20 games in 1969, when Minnesota captured the first AL West title. Boswell pitched for the pennant-winning 1965 Twins in their World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers and started Game Two of the 1969 ALCS against Baltimore, a game in which he suffered the arm injury that effectively ended his effectiveness. He also had a memorable off-field incident in 1969, getting into a fight with a teammate and his manager outside a Detroit bar. A good-hitting pitcher who batted .202 for his career, Boswell finished his career in 1971 with a 68-56 record and 3.52 ERA. He died in 2012 at age 67.
