The story on this card
This card catches Bahnsen on the way up: he closed 1966 with a September call-up, going 1-1 with a 3.52 ERA and a save in four games for the Yankees, then spent the following spring fighting for a big-league job. Topps paired him on a Yankees Rookie Stars card with fellow prospect Bobby Murcer, part of the set's first print series. It is a recognized rookie card for Bahnsen. Right-hander who won the 1968 AL Rookie of the Year award with the Yankees, then anchored a heavy three-man rotation with the White Sox before closing his career as a Montreal Expos reliever.
Murcer reported to spring training in 1967 expecting to compete for the Yankees' shortstop job, but a draft notice sent him into the Army instead, where he served in the radio corps and missed the entire big-league season. This Rookie Stars card, from Topps' first series, shares space with fellow Yankee farmhand Stan Bahnsen and is Bahnsen's rookie card; Murcer's came on 1966 Topps #469. Oklahoma City-born outfielder who came up as a Yankees shortstop prospect, lost two seasons to the Army, then became a five-time All-Star center fielder and 1972 Gold Glove winner for New York.
