About Dooley Womack

In his second Yankees season, Womack set career highs, going 5-6 with 18 saves and a 2.41 ERA in 65 games, leading the club in appearances, games finished and saves. On May 14 he earned the win in the game where Mickey Mantle hit his 500th career home run, and Mantle thanked him afterward for the chance to share the moment. This first-series card pictures him with the Yankees.

Horace Guy Womack, born August 25, 1939, in Columbia, South Carolina, pitched right-handed under the nickname Dooley, given to him as a boy by a family friend called Dool. Signed by the Yankees in 1958, he spent eight seasons in the minors before reaching the majors in 1966 at age 26, almost exclusively as a reliever. Listed at 6 feet, 170 pounds, he relied on control rather than power, working the ball low in the strike zone. Over five major league seasons with the Yankees, Houston Astros, Seattle Pilots and Oakland Athletics, he went 19-18 with a 2.95 ERA and 24 saves in 193 games, making one start. His best year came in 1967, when he led the Yankees with 18 saves. He was the pitcher of record when Mickey Mantle hit his 500th career home run on May 14, 1967. Womack retired in 1971 and later worked selling clothing, in real estate, and in commercial flooring, and coached American Legion baseball. He is not a Hall of Fame inductee.
