1969 Topps #452 Al Ferrara

About Al Ferrara
Selected by the San Diego Padres in the October 1968 expansion draft, Ferrara became one of the original Padres and had one of his best offensive seasons, batting .260 with 14 home runs and 56 RBIs over 138 games. His 1969 Topps card, #452, from the set's fifth print series, is his first as a Padre and exists in two collectible states distinguished by the color of the first-name lettering on the front.
Al Ferrara was a Brooklyn-born outfielder who spent most of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers before finishing up with the San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds. A classically trained pianist as a boy, he gave up the keyboard for baseball as a teenager and signed with the Dodgers out of Long Island University. He broke in in 1963 and won a World Series ring that year without appearing in the Series itself, then worked his way into the everyday lineup by 1967, when he hit a career-high 16 home runs and was named Dodger of the Year. An ankle injury suffered chasing a fly ball in 1968 ended his Dodgers tenure, and the Padres took him in the October 1968 expansion draft, where he became one of the original Padres and turned in two of his most productive full seasons at the plate. He retired after 1971 with a .259 career average and later worked in the Dodgers' community relations department.
