1969 Topps #333 Ivan Murrell

About Ivan Murrell
Drafted away from Houston in the 1968 expansion draft, Murrell entered 1969 as a member of the brand-new San Diego Padres and became a regular in their outfield, appearing in 111 games with 3 home runs and 25 RBI. His 1969 Topps card, #333, shows him with the Padres in his first season with the club; it comes from the set's fourth print series, carries a regular number, and his rookie card is his 1968 Topps issue.
Ivan Murrell, born in Almirante, Panama, was a right-handed outfielder who spent parts of ten seasons in the majors from 1963 to 1974. He broke in with the Houston Colt .45's and stuck with the Houston franchise through its transition to the Astros name before Houston left him exposed in the 1968 expansion draft, where the San Diego Padres selected him. Murrell became a regular in San Diego's outfield, and his best season came in 1970, when he set career highs with 12 home runs, 35 RBI, 43 runs, 85 hits and 125 games played. He finished his big-league career in 1974 with the Atlanta Braves. Over 564 games Murrell hit .236 with 33 home runs and 123 RBI. He later played for the St. Lucie Legends of the Senior Professional Baseball Association in 1989, hitting .272 with five home runs in 47 games, and worked afterward as a scout and minor league coach for the Houston Astros organization. Murrell died in Stuart, Florida, in 2006 at age 63.
