1969 Topps #271 Larry Stahl

About Larry Stahl
After being taken by the San Diego Padres in the 1968 expansion draft, Stahl became part of the club's inaugural roster, playing 95 games in 1969 and splitting time between the outfield and first base while batting .198 with three home runs and 10 RBI. His 1969 Topps card pictures him with the expansion Padres in their first season in the National League.
Larry Stahl was a left-handed hitting outfielder who spent ten seasons in the majors from 1964 to 1973 with the Kansas City Athletics, New York Mets, San Diego Padres, and Cincinnati Reds. Signed by the Athletics as an amateur free agent in 1960, he debuted in September 1964 and grew into a semi-regular outfielder in Kansas City before moving on to the Mets and then to San Diego through the 1968 expansion draft, where he had his best season in 1971 at .253 with eight home runs. Used increasingly as a pinch hitter later in his career, Stahl became Cincinnati's top man off the bench in 1973, helping the Reds win the National League West and appearing in that year's NLCS against the Mets. After his playing days he returned to his hometown of Belleville, Illinois, where he worked in the coal industry and later owned a local tavern.
