1969 Topps #387 Bobby Klaus

About Bobby Klaus
On December 2, 1968, the San Diego Padres selected Klaus from the Phillies in the Rule 5 draft, the move pictured on this fourth-series card showing him with San Diego. He did not stay there long: on March 28, 1969, the Padres traded him with Ron Davis to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Tommie Sisk and Chris Cannizzaro.
Robert Francis Klaus, an Illinois-born right-handed infielder, signed with the Cincinnati Redlegs as an amateur free agent in 1959 after attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He broke into the majors on April 21, 1964, as a pinch hitter, and split that rookie year between Cincinnati and New York after the Mets purchased him in July. Listed at 5 ft 10 in and 170 lb, he showed a patient eye at the plate, drawing nearly as many walks as strikeouts over his career. His final big league season came in 1965 with the Mets, and his last game was October 3, 1965. Over 215 career games he batted .208 with 6 home runs, 29 RBI and 65 runs scored. Though his playing days in the majors ended after 1965, he kept moving through pro baseball via trades and a Rule 5 draft pick before his career wound down. He is the brother of former MLB infielder Billy Klaus.
