1969 Topps #334 Phil Roof

About Phil Roof
Healthy again, Roof took back the Oakland catching job in 1969 and had his most patient year at the plate: 106 games, a .235 average and 33 walks that lifted his on-base percentage to .337, more than 100 points above his batting mark. He threw out 20 of the 53 runners who tried to steal on him. The following January the A's sent him to Seattle in the package that brought All-Star first baseman Don Mincher to Oakland, so #334 turned out to be his last Athletics card.
Phil Roof was a defense-first catcher whose glove and throwing arm kept him in the majors for 15 seasons while his bat rarely did. Born in Paducah, Kentucky on March 5, 1941, he signed with the Milwaukee Braves in 1959 out of St. Mary High School and debuted at 20, catching the ninth inning of an April 29, 1961 loss to the Giants without ever getting to hit. Two one-game looks with the Braves and a trade to the Los Angeles Angels left him a spare part; only a winter-meetings deal after the 1965 season, moving him from Cleveland to the Kansas City Athletics, finally gave him a regular job. He caught for that franchise through its move to Oakland, then worked for Milwaukee, Minnesota, Chicago and Toronto, becoming the first player the expansion Blue Jays ever acquired. He retired in 1977 with a .215 average, 43 home runs and 210 RBI across 857 games, but also a .986 fielding mark and real arm strength: in 1974 he threw out 48.8 percent of would-be base stealers, second among American League catchers. He later coached in four big-league bullpens and managed 16 years in the Twins chain, winning his 1,000th game as a manager in 2004.
