1969 Topps #44 Danny Cater

About Danny Cater
Cater's three 1969 cards all trade on his 1968 season, when he hit .290, second in the American League, and led all AL first basemen with a .995 fielding percentage. None of the three is his rookie card. Card #1, a series-1 'A.L. Batting Leaders' issue, places him between champion Carl Yastrzemski and Tony Oliva; #44, also series 1, is his solo base card with Oakland; and #556, a series-6 'A's Stars' card, groups him with teammates Sal Bando and Bert Campaneris.
Danny Anderson Cater was born February 25, 1940, in Austin, Texas, and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies at age 18 in June 1958. He played twelve major league seasons, 1964-1975, for the Phillies, White Sox, Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals, filling in at first base, third base and the outfield. He was the 1968 American League batting runner-up at .290, behind Carl Yastrzemski's .301, the lowest average ever to win a major league batting title, and led American League first basemen with a .995 fielding percentage that year. He set a full-season best of .301 for the 1970 Yankees. Traded to Boston before the 1972 season along with Mario Guerrero for reliever Sparky Lyle, he retired with a .276 average, 1,229 hits, 66 home runs and 519 RBI, and later worked at the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts office in Austin.
