About Reggie Jackson

1969 Topps #260 is Reggie Jackson's rookie card and the headline rookie card of the set: a series-3 card, with Jackson alone on the card as an Oakland Athletic. He came to it off his first full big-league season, 1968 in Oakland, when he batted .250 with 29 home runs and 74 RBI. The year the card was issued became his breakout: a career-high 47 home runs, 118 RBI, a league-leading .608 slugging percentage and his first All-Star selection.

Reggie Jackson, born Reginald Martinez Jackson in Pennsylvania in 1946, was the second overall pick of the Kansas City Athletics in the 1966 draft out of Arizona State. He debuted with Kansas City in 1967 and moved with the franchise to Oakland the next year, becoming the left-handed power bat of the A's dynasty that won three straight World Series from 1972 through 1974. He hit a career-high 47 home runs in 1969, then led the league with 32 homers and 117 RBI in 1973, when he was the unanimous American League MVP and the World Series MVP against the Mets. Oakland traded him to Baltimore in April 1976, and after one season as an Oriole he signed with the New York Yankees as a free agent. His clutch October hitting earned him the nickname "Mr. October," capped by three consecutive home runs in the clinching Game 6 of the 1977 World Series, and New York won back-to-back titles in 1977 and 1978. He later played five seasons with the California Angels and returned to Oakland for 1987. A 14-time All-Star, Jackson finished with 563 home runs, 1,702 RBI and the career record for strikeouts, and he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993, his first year of eligibility.
