1969 Topps #105 Rick Monday

About Rick Monday
Card #105, from the first print series of the 1969 set, shows Monday with the Oakland Athletics following his 1968 season. He followed that All-Star year with another solid campaign in 1969, batting .271 with 12 home runs, 54 RBI and 119 games played in the outfield for an Athletics club building toward its early-1970s championship run.
Robert James Monday Jr. was the first overall pick in the inaugural 1965 MLB draft, signed by the Kansas City Athletics out of Arizona State, where he had led the Sun Devils to the 1965 College World Series title. A center fielder, he broke into the majors in September 1966 and went on to play 19 big league seasons for the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers, finishing his career with 241 home runs and a .264 average. A two-time All-Star, he reached the postseason with two different clubs and won a World Series with the Dodgers in 1981, highlighted by his pennant-clinching home run in Game 5 of that year's NLCS. Off the field he is remembered for a 1976 incident at Dodger Stadium in which he grabbed an American flag from two protesters trying to burn it on the field, an act that drew a phone call from President Gerald Ford. After retiring as a player he moved into the Dodgers broadcast booth, where he has called games for decades.
