About this card

This is one of the four combo cards in the 1969 Topps set - #532 Bird Hill Aces, #539 Ted Shows How, #556 A's Stars and #572 Giants Heroes - each grouping men from one club under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

This A's Stars combination puts three young Oakland regulars on one card as the club emerged as an AL West contender. Sal Bando, the third baseman, was named team captain in May 1969 and started the All-Star Game at third that July, the year he set career highs with 31 home runs and 113 RBI. Bert Campaneris, the shortstop and igniter of Oakland's lineup, missed most of July after fracturing a finger on a relay throw. Danny Cater, who split time at first base and outfield, had finished second for the AL batting title the year before and was in his final season with Oakland before moving on to the Yankees. All three wear Oakland Athletics caps on card number 556, part of Topps' sixth series for 1969.

Team captain of Oakland's early-1970s dynasty, Sal Bando anchored third base through three straight World Series titles and made four All-Star teams before finishing his career with Milwaukee. Bert Campaneris - a 5-foot-10 Cuban shortstop with a leadoff man's speed, he led the American League in stolen bases six times, made six All-Star teams and set the table for Oakland's three straight World Series champions. Danny Cater was a contact-hitting corner infielder and outfielder who spent 12 seasons with six clubs, finishing runner-up in the 1968 AL batting race at .290 and posting a full-season-best .301 for the 1970 Yankees before becoming the return in Boston's ill-fated Sparky Lyle trade.
