About Bob Burda

Card #392 in the fourth print series of 1969 Topps shows Burda with the San Francisco Giants. He played the full 1969 season for San Francisco, appearing in 97 games and hitting .230 with 6 home runs and 27 RBI as a left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder. Highlights included a three-run homer on May 9, a grand slam off Skip Guinn on July 9, and a game-tying homer followed by a game-winning double in a July 4 doubleheader against the Braves. It is a recognized rookie card.

Edward Robert Burda, a left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder from St. Louis, spent seven seasons in the majors between 1962 and 1972 with the Cardinals, Giants, Brewers and Red Sox after signing with St. Louis out of the University of Illinois. He spent most of his long professional career blocked by star teammates such as Stan Musial, Orlando Cepeda and Willie McCovey, so his big-league chances came mostly in bursts, including a strong half-season with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1970. Burda hit .224 with 13 home runs and 78 RBI over 388 games, working frequently as a pinch-hitter, led the National League in pinch-hits while batting .296 for the Cardinals in 1971, and closed his career the following year with the Boston Red Sox. He wore glasses after being hit in the face by a pitch in the minors in 1967, which he later said also helped steady his head at the plate.
