About Bob Moose

Moose had his career year in 1969, going 14-3 with a 2.91 ERA while splitting time between starting and relieving for Pittsburgh. On September 20 he no-hit the eventual World Series champion New York Mets at Shea Stadium, one of the highlights of his career. Card #409, issued in the fourth series, shows him with the Pittsburgh Pirates coming off that breakout season.

Bob Moose was a right-handed pitcher who spent his entire ten-year major league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, from 1967 through 1976. A product of Export, Pennsylvania, he broke in as a teenager and settled into the rotation the following year. His finest season came in 1969, when he went 14-3 with a 2.91 ERA and no-hit the eventual World Series champion New York Mets at Shea Stadium. Moose was part of Pirates teams that won five NL East titles between 1970 and 1975 and the 1971 World Series, though he is also remembered for a wild pitch that ended Pittsburgh's chances in the deciding game of the 1972 NLCS. A blood clot in his pitching shoulder required surgery in 1974 and cost him most of that season, but he returned to pitch through 1976. He finished his career 76-71 with a 3.50 ERA in 289 games. Moose died in a car accident in Martins Ferry, Ohio, on his 29th birthday, cutting short a career that had shown flashes of real brilliance.
