About Nate Colbert

The 1969 Topps card lands during Colbert's first full season and the Padres' inaugural year as an expansion club, part of the fourth print series. He didn't win the first-base job outright, starting behind Bill Davis, but took over in April and finished the season with a team-leading 24 home runs, 66 RBI and a .255 average, the most home runs by any rookie in the majors that year. The card shows him with San Diego, the club he would anchor as its first genuine power threat.

Nate Colbert was a power-hitting first baseman who became the San Diego Padres' first true star. Born in St. Louis in 1946, he broke in with the Houston Astros in 1966 before San Diego took him in the 1968 expansion draft. From 1969 to 1973 he averaged 30 home runs and 85 RBI a season, earning three straight All-Star selections from 1971 to 1973 as the club's first genuine power threat. His signature day came on August 1, 1972, when he hit five home runs and drove in 13 runs in a doubleheader against Atlanta, tying Stan Musial's homer record and setting a new mark for RBI. Chronic back problems, tied to a degenerative spine condition, cut his career short after the 1976 season. He finished with 173 home runs and 520 RBI over ten seasons and held the Padres' career home run record for decades. After playing, he worked as a hitting instructor and minor league coach and became an ordained minister.
