1969 Topps #448 Bob Tolan

About Bob Tolan
1969 Topps #448, from the fifth print series, depicts Tolan in his first season with the Cincinnati Reds after an offseason trade that sent him and reliever Wayne Granger to Cincinnati for Vada Pinson. Installed as the everyday center fielder, Tolan responded with a .305 average, 21 home runs and 93 RBI, establishing career highs in homers and RBI as he helped lay the groundwork for the Big Red Machine teams to come.
Bobby Tolan broke into the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1965 as a left-handed hitting outfielder, serving as a reserve on the pennant-winning 1967 and 1968 clubs before a trade to Cincinnati sent him to the Reds along with reliever Wayne Granger for Vada Pinson. Handed the everyday center field job, Tolan hit .305 in 1969 and followed with a career year in 1970, batting .316 and leading the National League with 57 stolen bases as the Reds won the pennant. An Achilles injury cost him the 1971 season, but he returned in 1972 to win both the Comeback Player of the Year award and the Hutch Award. Later stops took him to the Padres, Phillies and Pirates before he closed his career with San Diego in 1979. Over 1,282 games he batted .265 with 86 home runs, 497 RBI and 193 stolen bases, and he also played a season in Japan for the Nankai Hawks. He is not a Hall of Famer.
