About Johnny Bench
Bench has two 1969 Topps Reds cards. First-series #95 carries the Topps All-Star Rookie trophy. Fifth-series #430 is from the Sporting News All-Star subset; the paper had named him its 1968 All-Star catcher. In 1969 he hit .293 with 26 homers and 90 RBI, won a second Gold Glove, homered in his first All-Star start and caught Jim Maloney's April 30 no-hitter against Houston.
Johnny Lee Bench, born December 7, 1947, in Oklahoma City, grew up in Binger, Oklahoma, where he was his high school class valedictorian. The Cincinnati Reds took him in the second round of the first amateur draft in June 1965, the 36th pick overall, and he spent his entire 17-season career, 1967 to 1983, with Cincinnati. He won the 1968 National League Rookie of the Year award, the first catcher to take it, then anchored the Big Red Machine of the 1970s. He was the NL Most Valuable Player in 1970 and 1972, leading the league in home runs and RBI both years, and he helped the Reds win back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976, earning World Series MVP honors in the 1976 sweep of the Yankees. A fourteen-time All-Star, he won Gold Gloves in each of his first ten full seasons, 1968 through 1977, behind a powerful, accurate arm. His 45 home runs in 1970 stood as the single-season record for catchers until 2021, and his 389 home runs and 1,376 RBI remain Reds franchise records. After playing mostly first and third base over his final three seasons, he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989, his first year of eligibility, on 96 percent of the ballots.
