1969 Topps #142 Woody Woodward

About Woody Woodward
After a slow start and a thumb injury in 1969, Woodward eventually took over at shortstop for the Reds in late July and hit .278 over his final 69 games, helping keep Cincinnati in the Western Division race until the season's last weekend; he finished the year at .261. His 1969 Topps card, number 142, from the second print series, shows him with the Cincinnati Reds.
William Frederick Woodward, known as Woody, was a slick-fielding infielder from Miami who signed with the Milwaukee Braves out of Florida State University after a standout amateur career, including third-team All-American honors. He spent nine major league seasons, 1963 to 1971, as a shortstop and second baseman for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds, valued more for his glove than his bat. His finest offensive year came in 1966 with Atlanta, when he posted career highs across the board. Traded to Cincinnati in 1968, he became a steady utility piece for the Big Red Machine, appearing in the 1970 National League Championship Series and World Series against Baltimore. He hit only one home run in 2,423 career plate appearances. He retired after the 1971 season and later built a long front-office career, including stints as general manager of the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Seattle Mariners.
