1969 Topps #293 Dick Dietz

About Dick Dietz
Dietz's 1969 Topps card came during his second straight year sharing the Giants' catching job with Hiatt and Barton. That arrangement ended the following spring when both were traded, opening the door for Dietz to become San Francisco's full-time starting catcher in 1970, the breakout season that would earn him his lone All-Star selection.
Richard Allen Dietz was a catcher who spent parts of eight seasons in the majors, 1966 to 1973, mostly with the San Francisco Giants. Signed as an amateur free agent out of South Carolina before the 1960 season, he broke in with the Giants in June 1966 and worked his way from backup duty behind Tom Haller into the regular catching job by 1970. That year he set career highs across the board, batting .300 with 22 home runs and 107 runs batted in, and he made the National League All-Star team, hitting a game-tying homer off Catfish Hunter in the ninth inning. He caught every game down the stretch as the Giants won the NL West in 1971 before losing to Pittsburgh in the League Championship Series. Claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1972, he closed out his career with Los Angeles and Atlanta, finishing 1973 with a strong reserve season for the Braves. He retired with a .261 career average and later managed in the minor leagues.
