1969 Topps #594 Dooley Womack

About Dooley Womack
The Yankees traded Womack to the Houston Astros in December 1968 for outfielder Dick Simpson. He went 2-1 with a 3.51 ERA in 30 games for Houston before an August 1969 trade sent him to the Seattle Pilots along with Roric Harrison for pitcher Jim Bouton; combined, he finished the year 4-2 with a 3.29 ERA in 39 relief appearances. This card, a high number from the seventh series, pictures him with the Astros.
Horace Guy Womack, born August 25, 1939, in Columbia, South Carolina, pitched right-handed under the nickname Dooley, given to him as a boy by a family friend called Dool. Signed by the Yankees in 1958, he spent eight seasons in the minors before reaching the majors in 1966 at age 26, almost exclusively as a reliever. Listed at 6 feet, 170 pounds, he relied on control rather than power, working the ball low in the strike zone. Over five major league seasons with the Yankees, Houston Astros, Seattle Pilots and Oakland Athletics, he went 19-18 with a 2.95 ERA and 24 saves in 193 games, making one start. His best year came in 1967, when he led the Yankees with 18 saves. He was the pitcher of record when Mickey Mantle hit his 500th career home run on May 14, 1967. Womack retired in 1971 and later worked selling clothing, in real estate, and in commercial flooring, and coached American Legion baseball. He is not a Hall of Fame inductee.
